Therapy on Wheels is a mobile rehabilitation initiative of Subhiksha Voluntary Organization designed to bring essential therapy services closer to children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, particularly those from underserved and low-income communities in Hyderabad. The project addresses barriers such as distance, transportation difficulties, limited access to specialized therapists and the financial burden of frequent travel faced by families.
The primary goal is to improve timely and consistent access to rehabilitation services and support children in developing functional, communication, motor, social and daily-living skills.
The project will operate a mobile therapy unit equipped to provide physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy, along with appropriate rehabilitation resources and equipment. Qualified therapists and trained personnel will travel to identified communities and provide individualized or small-group sessions based on each child's needs. The project will also include basic assessment, therapy planning, progress monitoring, parent/caregiver guidance and referrals where additional specialized support is required.
The mobile unit will reach children who experience difficulty accessing regular therapy services because of transportation, financial or geographic barriers. Parents and caregivers will receive practical guidance on home-based exercises, communication strategies, functional activities and ways to reinforce therapy goals in the child's daily environment.
The intended impact is improved access to quality rehabilitation services, greater continuity of therapy and improved functional outcomes for participating children. The project aims to support improvements in mobility, communication, coordination, self-care, participation and overall independence, according to each child's individual needs.
By taking therapy services directly into communities, Therapy on Wheels will reduce access inequalities and help children with intellectual and developmental disabilities participate more fully in education, family life and their communities. The initiative will also strengthen caregiver capacity and create a sustainable community-based model for delivering rehabilitation services to children who are otherwise underserved.
Problem Statement
Children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), particularly those from underserved and low-income communities, often lack regular access to physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. Distance, transportation difficulties, limited availability of specialized therapists and the cost of repeated travel can prevent families from accessing consistent rehabilitation services.
Interrupted or delayed therapy can limit opportunities for children to improve mobility, communication, coordination, self-care and daily-living skills. Caregivers may also have limited access to professional guidance on continuing appropriate therapeutic activities at home.
Therapy on Wheels directly addresses these barriers by taking essential rehabilitation services into underserved communities. A mobile therapy unit staffed by qualified therapists will provide need-based physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy closer to children and families, supported by basic assessment, individualized therapy planning, progress monitoring and caregiver guidance. The project will reduce transportation, distance and access barriers while supporting children to improve their mobility, communication, coordination, functional abilities and participation through regular and individualized rehabilitation interventions.
To strengthen parents’ and caregivers’ capacity to support children with intellectual and developmental disabilities through practical guidance and home-based rehabilitation support. Caregivers will receive guidance from therapists on appropriate exercises, communication strategies, functional activities, positioning, mobility and daily-living skills that can be incorporated into the child’s routine. Regular caregiver interaction and progress feedback will help reinforce therapy goals between sessions, improve continuity of rehabilitation and encourage active family participation in the child’s development and well-being.
To strengthen the identification and ongoing management of children’s individual rehabilitation needs through basic functional assessment, individualized therapy planning and regular progress monitoring. Therapists will document children’s needs and progress across relevant areas such as mobility, communication, coordination, self-care and functional participation. Based on assessment findings, appropriate therapy goals and interventions will be planned and reviewed periodically. Where children require services beyond the mobile unit’s scope, families will receive appropriate guidance and referrals to specialized healthcare, rehabilitation or support services, promoting continuity of care and timely intervention.
To support children with intellectual and developmental disabilities in developing greater functional independence and participating more actively in family, educational and community settings. Therapy interventions will focus on practical abilities such as mobility, communication, self-care, coordination and daily-living skills according to each child’s individual needs. Families and caregivers will be encouraged to apply therapy goals in everyday environments, helping children use and strengthen their abilities beyond therapy sessions. By bringing rehabilitation services closer to underserved communities, the project will promote participation, dignity, inclusion and improved quality of life for children with IDD.
To establish a practical and sustainable community-based rehabilitation model that extends essential therapy services to children with intellectual and developmental disabilities who face barriers to accessing conventional therapy centres. The mobile unit will identify underserved communities, conduct regular outreach and coordinate service delivery based on local needs. Partnerships with families, community stakeholders and relevant service providers will be encouraged to strengthen referrals, continuity of care and community participation. Regular documentation, beneficiary tracking and outcome monitoring will support effective service planning and demonstrate the reach and impact of the mobile rehabilitation programme, helping strengthen long-term access to therapy for underserved children.
