Subhiksha Voluntary Organization proposes to provide a safe, accessible and reliable school bus for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities attending its Special School cum Rehabilitation Centre in Hyderabad. Many children supported by Subhiksha come from low-income families and face significant barriers in accessing safe and dependable transportation to school and therapy services.

The project aims to improve regular school attendance, access to education and rehabilitation, and the overall safety and well-being of children during daily travel. The proposed accessible school bus will provide structured transportation between students’ homes and the centre, reducing the transportation burden on families and helping children attend school and therapy sessions consistently.

The project activities will include procurement and deployment of a suitable school bus, installation of essential child-safety features and accessibility modifications, GPS tracking and appropriate insurance and safety arrangements. Trained staff will support children during transportation, ensuring safe boarding, seating, travel and drop-off.

The bus will primarily serve children with intellectual disability, autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy and other developmental disabilities. It will facilitate access to special education, physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, life-skills training and other rehabilitation services provided by Subhiksha.

The intended impact is improved attendance and continuity of education and therapy, reduced travel-related challenges for families, safer mobility for children with disabilities, and greater participation in inclusive learning and rehabilitation opportunities. By enabling reliable transportation, the project will contribute to greater independence, dignity and social inclusion of children with disabilities while providing meaningful support to their families.

The project will create a sustainable transportation resource for Subhiksha, strengthening its capacity to provide integrated education and rehabilitation services to children who would otherwise face difficulties in accessing them regularly.

The absence of a dedicated accessible school bus therefore limits consistent access to special education, therapies, life-skills training and rehabilitation services. A safe and accessible school transportation facility is essential to reduce these barriers, support regular attendance, ease the burden on families and promote greater inclusion, independence and dignity for children with disabilities.
