Subhiksha Voluntary Organization proposes to establish and strengthen a Residential Care and Rehabilitation facility for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), particularly children from vulnerable and low-income families who require safe accommodation, structured care, education and continuous rehabilitation support.
The primary goal of the project is to provide a safe, nurturing and child-centred residential environment where children can access essential services according to their individual needs. The project will address the challenges faced by families who are unable to provide continuous care or access specialized education and rehabilitation services on a regular basis.
The project activities will include providing safe residential accommodation, nutritious food, personal care, hygiene and daily assistance; special education and functional academics; physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy; psychological and counselling support; life-skills and self-care training; recreational, sports and cultural activities; and vocational/pre-vocational exposure for children approaching adulthood. Individualized support plans will be developed and children’s progress will be regularly assessed and documented.
Trained special educators, therapists, caregivers and support staff will work together to provide coordinated care. Parents and caregivers will also receive counselling, guidance and practical support to strengthen family participation and, wherever appropriate, facilitate family reintegration and community inclusion.
The intended impact is to improve the safety, well-being, learning, functional abilities, communication, self-care and independence of participating children. The project will help reduce the vulnerability of children who require higher levels of daily support and provide them with opportunities to develop their abilities in a dignified and supportive environment.
Through integrated residential care, education and rehabilitation, the project will promote protection, inclusion, dignity and greater independence for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities while strengthening the capacity of their families and caregivers to support their long-term development.
Problem Statement
Children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), particularly from vulnerable and low-income families, face limited access to continuo’s needs related to communication, mobility, personal care, learning and daily living.
Limited availability of integrated residential services can result in interruptions in education and rehabilitation, increased caregiver burden and fewer opportunities for children to develop functional and independent living skills. Children requiring higher levels of daily support are particularly vulnerable when families lack adequate resources and access to specialized services.
There is a need for a safe, inclusive and child-centred residential facility that combines accommodation, nutrition, personal care, special education, therapeutic interventions, life-skills training, counselling and recreational activities. The proposed project will address these gaps through coordinated residential care and rehabilitation, enabling children with IDD to improve their functional abilities, well-being, dignity, protection and participation in family and community life.

To provide safe, dignified and inclusive residential care integrated with specialized education, rehabilitation and life-skills support, enabling children with IDD to improve their functional abilities, well-being, independence and inclusion.
To strengthen families’ and caregivers’ capacity to support children with intellectual and developmental disabilities through counselling, caregiver guidance, practical training and regular engagement. The project will promote informed family participation in children’s education, rehabilitation, personal care and life-skills development. It will also provide guidance on home-based support, communication, behavioural and daily-living needs, helping caregivers respond more effectively to their children’s individual requirements. Wherever appropriate and in the child’s best interests, the project will encourage family participation, community inclusion and social integration, contributing to the child’s long-term well-being, dignity, protection and continued development.
To enhance the functional abilities, self-care, communication, social and daily-living skills of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities through individualized life-skills training, functional education, recreational activities and age-appropriate pre-vocational and vocational exposure. Children approaching adulthood will receive opportunities to develop practical skills, responsibility, confidence and greater independence in everyday activities. The project will support children according to their individual abilities and developmental needs, helping them participate more effectively in family, school and community settings and prepare for greater independence and meaningful participation in adulthood.
To promote the physical, emotional, communication and overall well-being of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities through regular therapeutic and supportive services. The project will provide access to physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and communication support, psychological counselling and other appropriate interventions based on individual needs. Children will also be encouraged to participate in sports, recreational, cultural and social activities that support physical fitness, confidence, communication and social participation. Regular assessment and documentation will help track individual progress and guide appropriate interventions, contributing to improved functional abilities, quality of life, dignity and participation.
To ensure a safe, protective and child-centred residential environment where children with intellectual and developmental disabilities receive consistent care, supervision and support. The project will promote appropriate safeguarding practices, personal hygiene, nutrition, health monitoring, safe routines and respectful caregiving. Trained caregivers and support staff will follow structured care practices designed to protect children’s dignity, safety and well-being. Individual records and regular monitoring will support continuity of care and timely identification of children’s changing needs. The project will also strengthen coordination among educators, therapists, caregivers and families to ensure that children receive consistent and responsive support throughout their residential stay.
